Software Architect / Development Consultant

Summary Description

As an architect and developer, you will be a critical member of a small, innovative engineering team building a state-of-the-art, highly scalable cloud-based healthcare applications.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Under the Development Manager’s leadership, assist in architecting, developing, deploying and managing a highly scalable, cloud-based, HIT solution and all front-end and back-end components.
  • Collaborate with product management and leadership team in understanding requirements, proposing innovative solutions using existing commercial and/or open source solutions as appropriate, and helping create and manage release plans.
  • Produce detailed solution architecture and accompanying documentation in alignment with the established future state vision, architectural best practices and technology standards/policies.
  • Provide healthcare IT subject matter expertise, technical guidance and manage day-to-day developmental activities for a team of remote engineers as needed.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Previous work in the healthcare IT space (HIE, EHR/EMR) is required (5+ years minimum).
  • Proficiency in healthcare IT messaging (e.g. HL7 v2/v3, IHE profiles, Direct, Healtheway, security), document (e.g. CCD, CCR, NCPDP) and semantic interoperability (e.g. ICD9, CPT4, LOINC) standards.
  • Experience architecting software with the following characteristics: software as a service, multi-tenancy, transaction processing (e.g. EDI, HL7, XML), integration of custom-built and third-party applications.
  • Solid experience (5+ years) in multi-tier, J2EE based, enterprise class full lifecycle Java application development using Spring framework.
  • Experienced with SOAP and REST-based Web Services development, Spring Security framework, JSON, XML and Servlets.
  • Must have prior experience with open source relational database (MySQL, PostgreSQL, or similar), Hibernate and data modeling techniques.
  • Expert understanding of object-oriented design concepts and design patterns.
  • Proficient with open-source web servers, application containers and platforms (Apache and Tomcat).
  • Sound knowledge and experience in Agile development practices, preferably Scrum, and related tools like JIRA, GreenHopper, is expected.
  • Must be able to work independently and in a team.
  • Dynamic, driven and detail-oriented.
  • College degree or equivalent in Medical Informatics, Computer Science or clinical field (MD, RN, Pharm).

Work Environment

Virtual/office environment with up to 25% travel to client site.
